A February of Courage Under Difficulty and Reimagining Reality

A February of Courage Under Difficulty and Reimagining Reality

This is yet another wild and crazy month, with the redeeming quality of the potential for revisioning what we are dealing with for both collective matters and in terms of our own personal evolution. The thirty-day lunation cycle initiated by the very potent previous New Moon from January 18th in late Capricorn still has sway over the first two and a half weeks of February, and features – once again – prominent outer planet placements involving personal planet interactions that presage a powerfully transformative influence as the February month begins that we will have to find a way to get through in an extraordinary fashion, with no real option to bypass. We are up against the tenor of the times with the dramatic choice to either rise above or else to succumb to despair at finding any kind of way through. The outsize strength of this late Capricorn New Moon featured a stellium of six planets including Pluto within the last four degrees of Capricorn and the first four of Aquarius, see details below. Then the Leo Full Moon, which is also quite something, arrives on February 1st. What we have going on this month in terms of outer planets is, once again, intense, leading, if we are paying attention, to constructive metamorphosis and personal evolution on a large and perhaps even a societal scale.

The stellium of personal planets plus Pluto from this recent late Capricorn lunation involves Mercury and Mars in tight conjunction, at 26° Capricorn, followed by the Sun and Moon at 28° 43’, then Venus and Pluto at 1° and at 3° Aquarius. The aspects that the Capricorn planets make with Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus in the final degrees of Pisces and of Taurus are sextiles and trines, and yet they are powerfully significant and remain challenging. Any close aspect between these hugely influential outer planets and personal ones are inevitably potent and confronting. Saturn and Uranus, both at 27° of their respective signs in the recent New Moon, are thus closely sextiled and trined by the New Moon as well as Mercury and Mars. There is also a partile septile between Jupiter and Uranus, to the minute of a degree, which is a marker for brilliant and somewhat quirky ideas arriving just in time to save the day.

This potent New Moon configuration from the previous January month is seconded in its transformational and revelatory influence by another extremely powerful lunation, the Leo Full Moon of February 1st, which features a stellium of five planets in Aquarius opposed the Moon at 13° Leo. This is another gang-buster configuration again featuring Trickster Uranus its surprises, and also with Neptune now in Aries and with Saturn less than two degrees away, closely conjoining Neptune all month. The SaturnNeptune conjunction re-forming in Aries is another extremely important astrological headline for this February month, characterizing this month and year with their twin viewpoints of the practical outer versus the inner spiritual. Then, too, there is a close contra-parallel to Uranus from Mars, exact to the minute of a degree. The MarsUranus interaction reminds us of synchronicity unfolding, with unexpected events and turns of circumstances, always something new on the scene, throughout February. There is the potential here for passionate sudden action that can lead to accidental unexpected consequences, as, indeed, it already has on the world stage. With Mars, the ancient God of War, mixed up with the surprise impulse of Trickster Uranus, we might see more of the saber rattling that has already characterized this young year.

The late Aquarius Solar Eclipse and New Moon of February 17th is another quite potent lunation, with Pluto remaining closely contra-parallel with Jupiter, for expansionist accentuation, and with Uranus, now in direct motion, closely squared by the Sun and Moon at 28° Aquarius. Saturn and Neptune are additionally nearing their exact conjunction and are semi-sextile the eclipse Sun and Moon. This eclipse is thus another extremely potent lunation with outer planets again activated. Mercury turns retrograde soon after, on the 25th, and moves backward through Pisces from 22° back to 8°, stationing direct on March 20th and escaping its post-retrograde shadow only on April 9th. These weeks might constitute an extremely introspective period made more dramatic by the outer planet presence in the February and March skies.

Meanwhile Pluto forms a wide trine with Uranus that gets closer and closer as Uranus re-enters Gemini on April 25th, leading up to July and August when the trine perfects at 4° of their respective signs of Aquarius and Gemini. This UranusPluto trine, quite active last year and this, reminds me of the 1960s when they were in conjunction with Saturn opposed, and when righteous rebellion rocked the American atmosphere. We are seeing something like that now, and it does seem likely to intensify as we head toward summer when the midterm elections and the battle for free and fair will likely be raging.

These are incredible times, and they might seem to be almost, if not over-the-top, too much. The counter to the drastic ongoing tragedies we witness daily in this country lies in the equally obvious truth of American citizens awakening – right there in tragedy’s midst. In everything that happens, while we might not be able to entirely control events, we still have agency in our response to these events. This can always be to nevertheless maintain our own internal principles, to stay calm, and to find ways to respond that remain constructive. One lesson here is that our inner values must in all this remain our own, independent of outside influences. Perhaps that 20th century anthropological genius Margaret Mead said it best, when she stated: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
